Kunsang Yeshe Retreat Centre is a Tibetan Buddhist Centre affiliated with the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT) and located in Katoomba in the beautiful Blue Mountains, NSW. We are actively looking for a volunteer Centre Director and Spiritual Program Coordinator (SPC) to help develop Kunsang Yeshe Retreat Centre to its full potential.

Centre Director

The Centre has recently moved to the retail area of Katoomba and has nearby access to public transport. This location makes it much easier for students to get to and enables passersby to drop into the Centre’s shop. We are actively looking for a volunteer Centre Director to work with the Executive Committee to develop Kunsang Yeshe Retreat Centre, in alignment with FPMT policy and guidelines. 

The Centre Director is primarily responsible for:

● Coordinating and supervising the running of the Centre
● Providing leadership and guidance to the staff and volunteers
● Promoting harmony within the Centre and the local community
● Understanding and upholding FPMT policies and guidelines.

Spiritual requirements:

● You will have a strong connection to Buddhism and offering service to others.
● You will be committed to working to support FPMT’s vision.
● You will be familiar with the FPMT tradition of study, practice, service and ethical conduct.
● You will have attended an FPMT Foundation Service Seminar or will commit to do so within
one year of appointment.

Required skills and attributes:

● Excellent communication skills
● Inititative and problem-solving skills
● Flexibility, with a ‘can do’ attitude, and the capacity to embrace change and adapt where
necessary
● Ability and willingness to work as part of a mutually supportive team
● Excellent written and oral English language skills
● Good computer skills and some understanding of using social media to connect with people,
as well as the ability and willingness to learn related new skills in this area

Conditions

Time commitment
This is a part-time voluntary position. The number of hours required for this role is approximately 20 hours per week, with some weekend work required. You can work from home or at the Centre, on a flexible schedule to allow for variations in workload during teaching events.

Leave
The Centre Director is entitled to 4 weeks leave away from the role every 12 months. This does not include time the Centre Director might need to be away from the Centre to attend national meetings, for example, or on other Centre business.

Support

This is currently a volunteer position without stipend. You are encouraged to attend Centre courses and teaching events as part of your ongoing spiritual development.

Appointment and reporting lines
The Centre Director is appointed by the Executive Committee with the agreement of FPMT Inc. The Centre Director reports to and is a member of the Executive Committee. The appointment is for a period of 2 years and is renewable at the discretion of the Executive
Committee and FPMT Inc.

Spiritual Program Coordinator

We are actively looking for a volunteer SPC to help plan, coordinate and supervise our spiritual program and retreats, in alignment with FPMT policy and guidelines.

The SPC is primarily responsible for:

● Planning the spiritual program and its budget in consultation with the Centre Director
● Ensuring that the spiritual program reflects the unique FPMT lineage, as presented in FPMT
education programs and the FPMT Five Pillars of Service
● Setting up and coordinating a Spiritual Program team to support you in this role
● Managing the implementation of the program.

Spiritual requirements:

● You will have a commitment to Buddhist practice, with a commitment to FPMT’s vision.
● You will be familiar with the FPMT tradition of study, practice, service and ethical conduct.
● You will preferably have attended either a one-month Kopan course, or a one-month retreat
with Lama Zopa Rinpoche, or have had a commitment to an FPMT centre, study group or
project.
● You will have attended an FPMT Foundation Service Seminar or will commit to do so within
one year of appointment.

Required skills and attributes:

● Ability to liaise and work with a range of different people and a commitment to apply
Buddhist practice to your interactions with others in a variety of situations
● Good organisational skills and an ability to work to deadlines
● Ability to lead and coordinate a team of volunteers to support you in your role
● Flexibility, with a ‘can do’ attitude and the capacity to embrace change and adapt where
necessary
● Good computer skills and understanding of using social media to connect with people, as
well as the ability and willingness to learn related new skills in this area

You can work from home or at the Centre, on a flexible schedule to allow for variations in workload during teaching events. Job sharing with another person is possible for this role.

The SPC is entitled to 4 weeks leave away from the role every 12 months. This does not include timethe SPC might need to be away from the Centre to attend national meetings, for  example, or on other Centre business.

The SPC is co-appointed by the Centre Services Director at FPMT International Office and the Executive Committee. The SPC reports directly to the Centre Director and is a member of the Centre’s Executive Committee.
The appointment is for a period of 2 years and is renewable at the discretion of the SPC, Centre Director and FPMT Centre Services Director.
